Why Does My GFCI Outlet Keep Tripping Randomly Without Load?

A GFCI that trips with “no load” is usually sensing a small ground fault or moisture, not overload. Common causes include a damp exterior box, a downstream device leaking current, reversed line/load wiring, a shared neutral, a worn GFCI, or damaged insulation. In many St. Louis homes, the issue is downstream on the same circuit.

Quick checks:

  • Press Reset, then Test to confirm the device works.
  • Unplug/reset downstream outlets and appliances.
  • Dry or replace a damp cover/box.
  • If it still trips, have wiring inspected and the GFCI replaced.
